Travel opens up a world of new experiences. For some, a visit to national parks is the first introduction to outdoor adventure while others may be seasoned professionals. Regardless of our level of experience, travelers need accurate information and resources on where to find it.
Wild fires and other natural disasters can impact travel to vacation destinations and it is important to know the facts on what to expect when traveling. Here are tips and resources for travelling responsibly, where to find more information on transportation, weather and even wild fires, and where to find information to start planning your next getaway.
WEATHER CONDITIONS
Especially in the winter, it is important to know what weather to expect. The weather varies greatly from Visalia to the upper areas of the park, sometimes by 30 degrees. Park visitors can check the current weather conditions as well as look at the 10-day forecast. Dressing in layers is always a good suggestion as the temperatures can vary throughout the day.
NATIONAL PARKS AND NATIONAL FOREST VISITOR ACCESS
Some areas of Sequoia National Park are not accessible due to damage from recent fires and winter weather. The park is working to reopen these areas as soon as it is safe for visitors and staff. This is an evolving situation so please check the park website for the most current conditions.
Kings Canyon National Park is open for visitors. Grant Grove, the General Grant Tree, Big Stump picnic area and other areas are open. The road to Road's End down in the canyon closes for the season about Nov 15 and reopen in spring, usually late April. Please follow all posted instructions regarding open areas. Check park website and social media for complete information.
Sequoia National Forest also has seasonal closures and some closures due to fire damage. Check the Sequoia National Forest website for the most current information.

PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT
Our national parks are just that: ours. That means we need to be responsible to clean up after ourselves and leave no trace behind from your visit to the parks. It is best to take all trash home with you so that wild animals aren't attracted to it. If trash cans are available, use them! The responsibility for removing your trash is with you! If you aren't familiar with the rules of camping, ask a ranger. They will be happy to help visitors new to the parks what the best practices are.
