Wildflower Walk at Lewis Hill Preserve
For one day each year, access is granted to Lewis Hill Preserve—a protected site normally closed to the public and home to rare plants, unique geology, and thriving wildlife. This self-guided hike offers a chance to explore rolling hills alive with seasonal wildflowers, learn from experts stationed along the trail, and experience a place shaped by stewardship and care.

Why Lewis Hill Matters
Lewis Hill is one of the few places where the Striped Adobe Lily, a threatened wildflower, continues to survive. This tiny bloom depends on the preserve’s unusual serpentine soils—rocky, mineral-rich terrain that supports plant and animal life found almost nowhere else. Along the trail, sweeping wildflower displays, burrowing owls, and a variety of bird species reveal how geology and biology intersect in this sensitive habitat.
What to Expect
This is a moderate hike over uneven terrain and natural surfaces. The experience is self-guided, allowing exploration at a personal pace with staffed stations along the route focused on geology, birding, and wildflowers. At the top, kite flying adds a moment of lightness and joy before heading back down.
